Stevie Nicks Month

 By Jami Morain

Happy October followers! I would like to welcome the season with none other than the White Witch herself, Stevie Nicks.

One of Nicks' outfits on display at the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

A few years ago, I was scrolling through Twitter and my feed was overwhelmed with "Happy Stevie Nicks Month" tweets. Personally, I am a huge fan of the rock and roll queen, so my interest was piqued. Fans from all over shared their favorite Stevie Nicks pictures and celebrated the occasion with fellow fans. I have reserved October for Stevie Nicks month ever since.

Stevie Nicks has always been associated with witches. If you have ever seen videos of her performing, listened to her lyrics, or seen the way she dresses then this shouldn't come as a surprise. Nicks is known for her long, flowy black dresses and wearing moon necklaces. She also plays herself in season three of American Horror Story, The Coven.

One of the biggest connections to her "witchyness" is her fan-favorite song, "Rhiannon." A song that is literally about a witch. Another example is "Silver Springs" because of the lyrics "time cast a spell on you but you won't forget me." Those lyrics combined with the glares she is throwing at Lindesy Buckingham during the 1997 Live Warner Bros performance has fans convinced that she has cast a spell on him.

However, its not just the songs- its also how connected she becomes to the music. People see the way her body moves while performing and believe she is casting spells or enchantments.

American Songwriter wrote a piece discussing how this "rumour" (that was a play on words if you missed it) started. The article starts, "A large part of Nicks’ allure comes from her almost supernatural essence. From her long flowing gowns to her cryptic, spell-like lyricism, Nicks earned her witch comparison a long time ago and has done nothing but double-down on it in recent years."

It went on to say that at first Nicks' wasn't a fan of being called a witch and in the 70s tried to back away from being associated with the description, but now fully embraces it. She stated that she does not believe in witchcraft as a philosophy, she just "loves black clothes, and I love moons and stars and Merlin hats and Mickey Mouse."

Yesterday in Madison Square Garden Nicks' announced that Mattel is releasing a Rumours themed Barbie. The doll perfectly captures her witchy essence perfectly and Nicks loves it. To have this announced on Oct. 1 is even more proof that she owns October.

Once again, Happy October readers (or should I say Stevie Nicks Month) and may you channel your inner Stevie Nicks this spooky season.

Me with Nicks' signature in the Rock Hall.
