This Song Defines Summertime

by Jami Morain

Summer is a season that people crave for all year long. Summertime means freedom, sunshine, tan lines, and having windows down. As I have been scrolling on social media this month, I have noticed one thing people have in common. Eric Church's "Springsteen" is the soundtrack to everyone's summer as Church sings about being in love for the first time and used his idol, Bruce Springsteen, to tell it.

I scrolled through multiple comment sections on different platforms to read how people felt about the song, and some of them gave me chills.

"When you think about me, do you think about 17? Do you think about my old Jeep," Church sings. This song was released in 2012, which means my generation grew up listening to it during the summers, each year getting older. Now, some already have, or will be, entering the "real world."

Being a music lover is rewarding because of how powerful it is. Music makes our memories stronger because it attaches to them. Eric Church was inspired to write this song because he attended a concert with a girl when he was young and now every time he hears the artist they went to see, he thinks of her. The same way high schoolers grew up on this song and actually being 17, makes them nostalgic for that time.

The song completely embodies what summer feels like and I love seeing so many videos, tweets, or posts about what the song means to them. I wasn't able to actually track this information, but I wouldn't be surprised if this song encouraged people to start listening to Bruce Springsteen's music, especially because Church nods to a few Springsteen songs. Even better, I wonder if people now associate "Springsteen" as just the song title instead of the person now.

Isn't it "funny how a melody sounds like a memory?"
